Part 1
Boaz sat in the cave, his green hair shining in the fire’s glow. Outside it was cold, the snow falling in the mountains. Explosions could be heard in the far distance.
“Lei.” He said calmly. “Come sit by the fire. I don’t want you catching cold.”
A dark haired young woman looked over her shoulder, her silver eyes sparkling in the fire’s light. “Yes Master.” She said, moving away from the mouth of the cave.
Boaz gazed at the young maiden who sat on the other side of the fire. Her raven hair outlined her beautiful face. His heat beat rapidly within his chest as he continued to look over her body. Though hidden under her chain-mail armor, he could see the slender curves of her body. He longed to hold her in his arms, his partner, and his former student. He could remember the day that he found her.
Lei was an orphan that he had found trying to steal from the academy that he had trained and taught at. She was only three or four years old at the time. Boaz had convinced the counsel to take her in as a student instead of putting her in an orphanage. That’s when he was assigned as her teacher. He chose her name, which meant little flower. He raised her and taught her all he knew, mostly of dragons due to him being one. Lei had grown up fast over the years and when she turned fifteen he realized that she was no longer a little flower. She was a woman, now eighteen years old.
“Master.” Lei said, looking at her teacher. “Is something wrong?”
“No, Lei.” Boaz replied. “I’m fine and don’t call me Master anymore. We’re equals.”
Lei smiled, making his heart skip a beat. “You’ll always be my master Boaz.”
Boaz’s heart sank. You’ll always be my master. He repeated the sentence in her head. Why can’t I just tell her? He sighed silently to himself. He glanced at her again; she was reading a scroll, most likely touching up on her spells or something. He got up and walked to the mouth of the cave, gazing at the sky. The war going on in the land didn’t allow for love to develop. He remembered the gathering in the main hall at the academy with all the students. Slowly the elders had listed off the squads and the people in them. He remembered how his heart skipped a beat when he heard his named being followed by Lei’s and again when he saw her join him at the academy gates when they were going to leave.
Lei smiled then, saying, “Lets do our best and make our academy proud.”
He nodded and smiled as the two of them descended down the stone steps.
“Master.” Lei said, bringing him back to the present. “The signal.”
Boaz looked in the sky; a large white snowy owl was flying toward the cave. “Lets go.” He said, changing into his dragon form. Lei jumped onto his back and they took off.
