INTRODUCTION
"A long time ago, a warrior fought the Great Darkness. This hero was called The Guardian, as he defended the people from this darkness. He would enter battle with legions of foes, defeating, but not killing, them without so much as a scratch. This influenced those he defeated to live better lives, and so he traveled on, gaining a group of companions who shared his hatred for killing, and they fought together, reaching to the top of the spire from which the evil radiated. They entered the final room, there meeting the center of the Great Darkness, a evil so vile none could stand against it, besides The Guardian. In a battle which lasted for days, The Guardian defeated the evil, freeing those under it's power. He then disappeared, no one knows where even to this day." A old man, his head full of short, silver hair and his eyes clouded, was sitting on a mat in a large room, a fire snapping, popping, and blazing behind him. "And that is the Legend of the Guardian." Almost as soon as he had finished, a young boy called out, "Whoa, that's so cool!" The boy stood, his brown eyes sparkling with exitement. "I can't wait until the Guardian returns, like the prophesy said. He did say 'The Phoenix will fall, and rise again when summoned by necessity', didn't he?" The old man chuckled. "Yes, yes he did Geraint. I too cannot wait until that day, however nobody knows when the 'Phoenix' as he called himself, will rise again. it could be years ahead, beyond our lifetime. Or it could be that he rises again while we are alive. Nobody can tell the day or hour it will happen." The boy shook with exitement. "Well, we could still gather his gear for him for when he needs it!" Another child, a girl, laughed. "Geraint, you know better than anyone that his equipment is guarded by curses! We couldn't get near them, much less collect them!" Geraint paused for a second, then looked disappointed. "That's right, Melody, I couldn't collect the gear..." He sat down, "Although i'd still like to try!" Melody laughed again. "There he goes again, chasing the stars!" Geraint looked at her. "Well, i'd rather be a starchaser than a normal person! Chasing the stars would be a fun hobby!" the old man rose. "Now, now, children, calm down. We don't want any arguements on behalf of a old legend." Geraint and Melody stood as well. "We wern't arguing, sir, just playing around with each other!" Melody said, then added, "Right Starchaser?" She giggled, and Geraint looked shocked, his face slowly shifting into a smile as he realized what just happened. "That's right, i'm Starchaser!" he said, smiling widely. The old man smiled, "Looks like you have a new nickname, Geraint, that'll make it easy to find you, since it's so unique!" Geraint smiled, enjoying the new nickname. He went to bed, the story of the Guardian replaying through his mind as he layed there...
Chapter 1 - The Beginning
A brown haired man was walking along a meadow, when suddenly he stopped, his face distorted with shock and fear. He had good reason, as before him stood a shining man, with thin, transparent wings extending from his back. Relax, i will not harm you. I am the Phoenix, come to raise the Guardian, for the Great Darkness shall rise once again. "So why have you visited me?" The man asked the strange being, which seemed to communicate to his mind rather than through normal speech. I have visited you because you are to be the next Guardian... The man sat up, breathing heavily. Around him, instead of open fields and swaying trees, were solid walls. "That dream again... that's the third time this week." He shook his head. "Oh well, it's probably nothing. I most definatly am not the next Guardian!" He got up and went out, the town bustling with activity as people amassed in the marketplace. "Good morning, Starchaser." The man sighed. "Good morning Melody." As a black haired woman passed him by, watching him with a vicious glare. Ever since we fought as children she's been like this. It's sad, really. Geraint continued walking, coming up to a well nearby, and drawing water. He cupped some water into his hands, and drank it, then lowered the bucket once again into the well. I may as well go into the marketplace and see what's going on. There may be some good equipment for sale today. He walked across a small field, and began to make his way through the crowds until he came to a stand selling bread, and realizing he was hungry, he bought a loaf, then continued walking as he checked the other stands. No, nothing good today. Hey, wait, what's this? He was looking at a sword which looked in perfect condition, long and broad, it would be perfect. "Hey, sir, i'd like to buy this sword, how much do you want for it?" He asked the shopkeeper, who replied, "It's fourty Eldi." Geraint pulled out his change book and handed the shopkeeper the requested amount. "Hey, thanks. Go ahead and take the sword, I wasn't sure if it would have sold or not. And as a special thanks, i want to give you half of your money back. It's the least i can do." The shopkeeper went to hand back some of the coins, but looked stumped when Geraint held up his hand. "I have paid a fair price for such equipment, you need that Eldi more than I do. Keep it." The shopkeeper smiled, "Thanks a lot." The day passed as Geraint practiced with his new sword, and all too soon ended in a beautiful sunset. "Well, i guess I should head for bed now, I'll train more in the morning." He sheathed the sword, then returned to his room, laying down and falling asleep almost instantly...
Chapter 2 - The Mission
Geraint found himself in the field once again, and noticed the shining man once again. "Why am I the next Guardian? Isn't there someone else who is qualified?" No, there is not. You are fair in all your deals, you are honest, you never hold grudges. these three make you the most qualified to be the Guardian. And i need your answer this time, for the Great Darkness has begun to cover this world, effecting the hearts of those it meets and turning them away from the ways of peace and kindness to chaos and distruction. Only the Guardian can fix what has happened. "I am not sure, spirit, that you know what you're talking about." Geraint said, looking at the shining man. But I do, Geraint. I remember your willingness to assist as a child, i was with you the whole time. I witnessed your life, and protected you from harm. Now i call upon you, the heir of the Guardian, to raise up and fight for truth, justice, and to free those who have been misled. You were fond of me then, Geraint. "What are you talking about, spirit, that I was fond of you? I don't know who you are!" You may call me Phoenix. Almost as soon as he heard this, Geraint's eyes grew wide and surprized. "You're... you're the Guardian! B... but you're supposed to raise again, not raise another person to take your place!" Even I, the Guardian, must obey the laws of nature. I cannot defy death, as you cannot. I can only raise another Guardian. But that does not mean that I shall not fight alongside you. I will always be there for you, ready to give you advice and show you the secrets which have been hidden for so long. Geraint could see no option besides accepting the task of becoming the next Guardian. "I will accept the offer, if it is as important as you say, I can see no other option." I see, and agree with your choice. From now on, your name, Geraint, is meaningless. As I once did, you leave behind your last life as a civillian and enter into the life of the Guardian. The new Guardian stood, and nodded at Phoenix. "So what should people call me?" That is for you to decide. For you may take any name of your choosing. The new Guardian looked out across the meadow, then up, staring into the starry sky. "I believe i shall take the name Starchaser, for I shall attempt the impossible." I, Phoenix, recognise and accept you, Starchaser, to be my heir and to carry the equipment which you shall find and collect. The first mission for you is to scale the Isis Mountain, for at the peak there is a temple containing a sword forged in secret and heavily guarded. "I shall go as soon as I can." Starchaser said, nodding and walking away, into the shadows at the edge of the clearing, awakening in his room. "Well, this is no longer a dream, but a vision. I shall head out today, but first i should get some traveling goods, so I do not grow hungry as i travel. He stood up, and raced outside, almost colliding with Melody. "Hey, Starchaser, watch it!" He just smiled. She has no idea. He continued on, reaching the marketplace before some of the crowds, and buying three loaves of bread and a cantine with which to hold water. He went to the well, filled the cantine, then began walking towards the gate. "Where do you think you're going, sir?" A guard asked, looking him in the eye. "I have strict orders not to allow any civillians out of the gate." Starchaser just looked at him. "I am not a civillian. I have a job to do, and such a job requires i leave the gate." The guard scoffed. "Arn't you Geraint? i've seen you around. You're not leaving under any circumstance, unless you can defeat me in battle!" Starchaser looked at the guard. "I shall not fight you, but i will get through that gate." And continued walking towards the gate, not even flinching as the guard's sword came within an inch of his neck. "You're not leaving, and that's the final word." The guard said, then added, "Unless you prove your strength by defeating me in battle." Starchaser commented, "Trust me, if I fight you, the fool will be you." to which the guard replied, "Oh? Then try it." Starchaser drew the new sword, and the battle started, the guard making slashes and thrusts, Starchaser blocking time after time. Every once in awhile, Starchaser would make a thrust, in which the point of his sword would always clank off the armor the guard was wearing. After a few minutes of this, the guard called, "Hold.", and lowered his sword. "I have never seen such swordsmanship. You are free to enter and exit the gate as you please." Starchaser nodded, then thought, I've never had such skill before, either. He began walking back out, then heard in the back of his mind, I was guiding your sword, Starchaser. Upon exiting the gate, he entered a large feild, the grass flowing like an ocean as the wind carressed it. this looks like the field in my vision Starchaser noted, walking toward Mount Isis, which was the tallest mountain in the area. "Well, Phoenix, i hope you know what i'm doing, because i don't." Days passed as he traveled, his stock low when he reached the base of the mountain. "Well, at least i'm good for awhile." Starchaser said, then began the long, steep, and tiring climb up the mountain.
