"Why not?" Melanie asked, then another questioned came into her mind. "Don't you have to be born with magic powers in order to use them?"

"Not all the time," Yorshri said. "People can actually be taught to use magic. They can generally only learn the Basic Four, Fire, Wind, Earth and Water, but they can still learn."

"You're saying that I should learn?" She asked her Pokemon.
"Char! Charm! Mander!" He smiled.
"Learn the Fire magic?" Charmander nodded at her question.

"Acutally, in the way of Onshi, you'd have to go Water, Earth, Fire, Wind. Fire's a pretty hard Element to control without others to balance it."

"Start with Water. It's the least dangerous. Really the most that can happen is you getting drenched," Yorshri said.

"Well, here's something to help you." Yorshri took two magnets out of her pocket and put them in Melanie's hadn. "This will help you to focus your energy. It's the first step in magic training. Watch." She took another magnet out of her pocket and put it in the palm of her hand and it started to float and rotate. "It's hard at first, but you get the hang of it. It teaches basic control." She put the magnet away, then walked over to the water and swirled her hand above it. The water started to swirl and rise in motion with her hand. "Once you can get the magnet down, you can do some basic things like this. Water's the easiest because you don't have to put as much energy into it as the other Elements. You just use the water that's around you instead of having to create, per say, fire out of nowhere."

"Okay, I'll try." Melanie concentrated on the magnet her hand. She focused on it, trying to make it float. Charmander looked at the magnet closely, seeing if his trainer could do this. After a few minutes, the magnet still didn't move. "This really is hard." She said.

Melanie smiled back at her new friend. "Char!" Charmander tugged at Melanie's jacket.
"What is it, Charmander?" She asked.
"Charmander! Char!"
"The contest?" Her eyes widened as she remembered their training. "The contest! You've got to train!" She then looked at Yorshri. "Thanks for everything. We've got to train for the first contest, though. We need to practice our appeal. Once I get the magnet taken care of, can I meet you back here?"
